Overview of Oleon’s Sun Care Protection Line

With summer officially upon us, protecting your skin from harmful UV rays has become top of mind. And while the Earth’s atmosphere does protect us from some UV radiation, unprotected exposure to UVA and UVB rays damages the DNA in skin cells. Oftentimes, that damage causes genetic mutations that lead to skin cancer and/or premature aging.

However, products like those in Oleon’s sun care protection line are here to help. As a leading distributor of Oleon’s oleochemical products — including their fatty acids, glycerine, esters, dimers, technical oils, and specialty oleochemicals — our BLI team offers a comprehensive overview in today’s blog post. Stay tuned!

Formula Challenges

There’s no denying that consumers want sun care products with light formulations and minimal stickiness. But in addition to meeting those requirements, sun care manufacturers face several formulaic challenges:

  • Excess oil – causing greasy formulations

  • Crystallization issues in sun care formulas

  • Poor solubilization and/or dispersion of UV filters

  • Non-homogenous UV protection – lower SPF value

Oleon’s Suncare Ingredients

Nevertheless, Oleon overcame those challenges and produced a high-quality line of sun-protective products. Here’s a brief overview of their suncare ingredients:

Natural UV-Filter Solubilizer

Jolee 7202 is an excellent UV-filter solubilizer with fantastic surface diffusion. (For those who might not know, that simply means it spreads easily across the skin.) And while this emollient is slightly oily upon application, it finishes with a unique, powdery after-feel. Additionally, it’s a natural alternative to light silicone.

Jolee Jellies

The Jolee Jellies are thickened emollients with a soft-skin feel and easy spreadability. Because they’re oil-based, they maintain a transparent, natural appearance – with an impeccable pigment-dispersing agent. Additionally, these jellies are a sustainable option, as they’re a greener alternative to highly viscous Dimethicone. Other benefits include a unique sensory profile with a shear-thinning effect, water resistance, and easy film-forming.

Protective Emollients

Due to its branched structure, Jolee 7380 has a characteristic emollient feel. It features non-greasy after-feel, film-forming properties, and a viscosity of 200 mPa.s – making it easily spreadable. Personally? We love how it’s water-repellant and readily biodegradable.

Similarly, Jolee 7181 is a rich, water-repellant emollient with a highly protective film former. It serves as a wetting agent for UV filters and is also readily biodegradable.

Water Dispersible UV-Filter Solubilizer

Radia C173 is dispersible in water, requiring less emulsifier. Additionally, it’s an excellent UV-filter solubilizer and particle-wetting powder with SPF-boosting properties. And because of its ability to reduce the whitening effect of sun care products, this water-dispersible UV-filter solubilizer is ideal for light sun care emulsions.
